The Aeolian collection is made by skilled Indonesian craftsmen, from solid teak. The inspiration for the engravings comes from irregular shapes and patterns that are formed in dry and sandy areas under the influence of the wind. The wind can cause a process of Aeolian erosion that creates ripples and dunes in the landscape. It is remarkable that the pattern created by such irregular shapes can have a very harmonious and attractive appearance.
The skills required to create these particular patterns were found in North Java, where master sculptors passed on the ancient carving skills from father to son. Today, the demand for traditional items with deeply carved patterns of leaves and flowers is declining. Younger generations can often earn more by working in garment factories or tourism. As a result, most active traditional sculptors are of advanced age and can retire for the next five to ten years. Using their craftsmanship to develop new markets can help keep a tradition alive.
As a first step, Raw Materials has created the unique Aeolian collection of bowls inspired by the beauty of imperfection.
