Nova cross side table

Side table from our Nova collection. The side table is made of wood and rattan. This collection has a retro/Cane look and adds a cool twist to every interior.

Nova collection:
All items of the Nova collection are made from teak wood. The chairs and stools have been woven with rattan cane. Caning is a traditional method of weaving seats of chairs or other furniture with thin strips of rattan. The cross-weaving makes the seating strong and durable. Rattan is a climbing palm or liana that is using trees as support and can grow up to 100 meters long. Most of the existing rattan species grow in tropical forest of South East Asia, of which 70% in Indonesia. Teak has been a preferred hard wood for centuries for furniture, construction and ship building, also because it is very durable and suitable for outdoor use.

Teak wood is indigenous is India, Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, but because of extensive logging it is only in Myanmar that it still grows in natural forests. In Indonesia it was introduced in the 16^th century and during Dutch colonial time large plantations were started. After Indonesia became independent the Indonesian government has managed the plantations. This has been quite successful, as teak is a valuable wood and it has always been economical to replant teak after logging trees. Practically all the teak wood in Indonesia that is used for furniture production comes from these plantations. Only for local use sometimes teak from small farms near villages are used. Since it does not grow in the natural forests of Indonesia, no tropical forests are cut for teak wood. Since 2016 the Indonesian government has regulated all timber trade, with a system to trace all wood that is exported back to the source, where the trees were cut. This has been part of a the FLEGT trade agreement with the EU, to guarantee that only legal wood is imported into the EU.

These aspects together make teak production in Indonesia and its use for furniture both economically and environmentally sustainable.

Maintenance:
-The wood has a water-based coating, which protects against water stains, but advised is to use the furniture only indoors and not to leave fluids on the wood for longer period of time.
-Small damage or scratches in the wood with natural colour can be treated only on the spot itself with transparent or very light coloured oil.
-Cleaning of the rattan seat can be done with a cloth with little water.
-For the chairs with natural rattan, remove any moisture that remains after cleaning with a dry cloth.
-Do not place the natural rattan side table close to a fire or other heater, as the material can dry out and deteriorate.

Extra information:
Please note: This side table can be occasionally used as a stool, but is not made for intensive use. The carrying capacity is maximum 85 kg, on a stable and flat surface.
