Jane collection:
The Jane collection is a series of chairs with a metal frame and woven with either natural rattan or synthetic rattan. The weaving of rattan into baskets, furniture and lamps are specialized skills that are taught from parents to children. In and around the city of Cirebon in Indonesia families make ith farm land take up rattan weaving in the hours they are not so busy with other farm activities. These home skills have been professionalized in large production factories, but the weaving work is still done by the same skilled families. In the large factories, they come to the factory to do the weaving. In many medium-sized factories the work is partly done in the factory but part of the weaving is sometimes also outsourced to staff that work from their home, in their own time.
Rattan is a climbing palm or liana that is using trees as support and can grow up to 100 meters long. Most of the existing rattan species grow in tropical forest of South East Asia, of which 70% in Indonesia.
To make Jane chairs suitable for outdoor use, we also designed chairs which are woven with synthetic rattan. Our production partner is Indonesia only works with synthetic rattan made from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). This is a non-toxic synthetic material that has a number of characteristics that make it suitable for outdoor chairs:
*Waterproof and high UV-resistance
*Light, strong and can withstand high temperatures.
*Resistant to a variety of chemical solvents
*Polyethylene is the most widely used plastic and is recycable
